Work from the least invasive method up. Most kitchen, basin and shower blockages sit within the first metre of pipe and clear with a trap clean, a bicarb-and-vinegar soak or a plunger. Chemical drain cleaner is the one method we ask people to avoid: it rarely shifts a real blockage and it makes the pipe dangerous for the plumber who opens it next.

1. Clear the visible stuff. Lift the shower or floor grate, pull out hair, soap scum and leaf litter. In the kitchen, unscrew the plastic P-trap under the sink into a bucket and clean it out.

Why do tree roots block drains so often in northern Sydney?

As a general rule in NSW, the property owner is responsible for the pipes on their property up to the connection point, and Sydney Water is responsible for the main in the street. What counts as gasfitting work in NSW?

Under the Gas and Electricity (Consumer Safety) Act 2017, gasfitting work covers the installation, alteration, extension or repair of a gas installation, the same work on any flue attached to it, and connecting or disconnecting a gas container, regulator or appliance. It applies regardless of the value of the work and regardless of whether the property is residential, commercial or industrial.

• Running or extending a gas line — including a bayonet point for a heater or an outdoor BBQ line
• Installing or replacing a gas cooktop, oven, heater or gas hot water unit
• Any work on the flue serving a gas appliance

Can a general plumber do gas work?

No — not unless they are separately licensed in the gasfitting category. In NSW a licence lists the categories the holder may work in: plumbing, draining, gasfitting and endorsements such as Type B appliance work. A plumber licensed for water and drainage only cannot legally touch your gas installation, and a certificate holder can only work under the supervision arrangements attached to their certificate.

What certificate should you receive after gas work?

Two different certificates apply, and which one you get depends on whether the property is on the reticulated gas network or on bottled LPG. Since 1 March 2026, gasfitters must lodge these through BCNSW eCert — a posted or emailed PDF is no longer accepted for compliance lodgement.

What is Type A and Type B gas work?

Type A covers the certified domestic and light commercial appliances most homes have — cooktops, ovens, space heaters, gas hot water units. Type B covers uncertified or industrial appliances such as commercial boilers, kilns and large process burners, and requires a separate authorisation on top of a gasfitting licence. If you are quoting out work for a restaurant kitchen, a strata boiler or a plant room, ask specifically whether the gasfitter holds Type B authorisation for that appliance class.

What are the risks of unlicensed gas work?

What can you safely try yourself before calling a plumber?

If only one fixture is affected, it is worth ten minutes of your time. These steps are safe on Sydney's older pipework and will clear a fair share of kitchen and bathroom blockages without any chemicals.

1. Boiling water. Pour a full kettle slowly down the drain in three stages. Best on kitchen sinks where cooking fat has set.
2. Clear the trap. Put a bucket under the P-trap beneath the sink, unscrew it by hand, and pull out the hair and gunk. This is the single most effective DIY fix for a basin or kitchen sink.
3. Plunge properly. Cover the overflow hole with a wet cloth, fill the basin with a few centimetres of water so the plunger seals, then push and pull firmly about twenty times.
4. Bicarb and vinegar. Half a cup of bicarbonate of soda, then a cup of white vinegar, left for fifteen minutes and flushed with hot water. Gentle on pipes and works on light grease.
5. Hand auger on the shower. A small drain snake will pull out the matted hair sitting just below a shower waste.
6. Stop and call. If none of that shifts it in ten minutes, or a second fixture is misbehaving, the problem is past the trap. Further DIY at that point usually just adds to the mess.

What makes a blocked drain worse

• Caustic drain cleaners. Corrosive, ineffective on main-line blockages, and dangerous for whoever opens the pipe next.
• Repeated flushing. Every flush adds to water that has nowhere to go, which is how a blocked drain becomes a sewage overflow inside the house.
• Forcing a garden hose down the line. Can push the blockage into a tighter section or damage an already cracked pipe.
• Lifting a maintenance hole cover yourself. Sewer gas and contaminated water are genuine health risks.
